Making A Difference, Today and Tomorrow...

I was sitting in church one Sunday, as I had done most Sundays throughout my life.  This was a Sunday where the message focused on giving and missions budgets.  I tried to tune it out, as I had many times, but for some reason, this Sunday I couldn’t.

I heard the scripture reading from Matthew 25:40 (NIV) in a whole new way: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.“

I was gripped with the conviction that I needed to give more; that just putting money in the offering plate wasn’t enough.  Then overwhelm set in – how could I choose where to give?  There were just too many needs, and I was barely making ends meet for myself.

How could I, one person, make a difference?  I decided to join God where He was already working and find a non-profit organization, outside of my church that championed a cause close to my heart.

I chose to support a poor family in Honduras, who had lost their father.  Women were not allowed to work, so his wife desperately needed help to provide food and shelter for herself and her children.  I have been sending checks for 15 years to an organization who coordinates their support.

Then I learned that I could give even more by turning $100 per month into thousands of future dollars by naming the organization as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy.  How exciting it was for me to be able to leave a legacy that changed lives, even after I was gone.
